The ink palette is carved in an elliptical form from a piece of tourmaline with straight sides and a flattened base. The rim is decorated with two thin dragons flanking the edges lengthwise confronting a ‘flaming pearl’ whilst the tails merge at the end, forming a stylised ruyi. The stone is well-polished and translucent pink tone in with faint ice crackle inclusions.
